This increased speed provides equivalent correction and is achieved through pad diameters and orbits that are more conducive to bending or changing surfaces.The backplate follows an orbit (the magnitude of which depends on the distance between the axis of rotation of the drive shaft and the central axis of the backplate) and is free to rotate around its own central axis. Through the influence of centrifugal force and frictional force of the offset motion, the backplate can freely rotate at different speeds and directions. If friction prevents the disc from rotating while the tool is still operating, random orbital motion will simply become orbital motion. The number of disk rotations is variable and independent of the number of orbits performed. Random orbital motion is currently the best compromise between effectiveness and surface finish quality.
